-Online Task 4-

“A speech should be like a kite, designs are no use
if it cannot fly”

1. Think of at least 3 benefits of using speeches by famous figures, in the classroom.
                                a.     Speeches will be motivational.
                                b.     Students will gain confidence by role-modeling.
                                c.     The speeches are good examples because they are usually well organized.

2. Go to www.youtube.com and find the audio-visual on the speech. In not less than 50 words, state would the audio-visual be of any use in helping understand the speech better? State your reasons.
I think that the speech in audio-visual will be able to help in understanding it better. This is because of the visuals that it showed will give the audiences a clue. Some audio-visuals may have subtitles and it will help the understanding, too. However, a good audio-visual must be in high quality and the sound must be clear. Unless, we have the best system, then only it is possible. Other than that, the pronunciation must also be clear. Some of the students are facing problem getting use to the accent. Well, we can’t guarantee the sound system in the school, too. Sometimes, students find it difficult to understand the speech delivered live due to poor sound system.

3. Who is Martin Luther King?
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American priest, protester, and famous leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is also best known for his character in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world, using non-violent methods following the teachings of  Gandhi. He has become a national icon in the history of modern American liberalism.

4. Based on the questions below, analyse the features of the given written speech:

a. What is the purpose of the speech?
The speech “I have a dream” pointed out the racial inequality and discrimination to the African – Americans. He appealed to people for peace. It was his hope that people no longer fight for freedom because the fights are violent and many incidents made their hatred grew. He yearned to see peace immediately.

King used a persuasive tone. There are also repetitive words throughout his speech.

The use of anaphora and key themes.

d. Any interesting facts that you can gather based on the background of the speech?
The anaphora and the key themes remind audience about what the speaker is conveying. Sometimes, after a long speech, audience (including myself) tends to forget the main point of the speech.

5. Suggest a while-reading activity that can be derived from this particular speech.
