At present, it seems like letter
writing doesn’t exist anymore. People chose to correspond through emails, SMS
or just leave their messages in Facebook or Twitter. I often came across some
newly invented abbreviations in SMS such as 2BZ4UQT (too busy for you cutie), 2G2BT (too
good to be true), @TEOTD (at the end
of the day), AYT (are you there),
B2W (back to work), and many more.
These have tremendously affected my students’ spelling. Sometimes I find these
in their essays as well as poor punctuation. Students seemed to neglect the
importance of punctuation. A little mistake is enough to change the meaning of the
sentence. For example:
An English professor wrote the words,
"A woman without her man is nothing"
on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.
The men wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing."
The women wrote: "A woman: without her, man is nothing."
"A woman without her man is nothing"
on the blackboard and directed the students to punctuate it correctly.
The men wrote: "A woman, without her man, is nothing."
The women wrote: "A woman: without her, man is nothing."
Therefore, it is very important to continue
letter writing. This is to enhance students’ skills in writing and using
punctuation. It helps to promote creative writing so that students will be able
to think and use the language to produce creative works.
